For Pride 2019, Troye Sivan and Charli XCX initiated Go West Fest as a non-profit festival created to support emerging LGBTQ+ musicians and visual artists. The aim was to establish a new cultural platform that prioritized access, visibility, and care.
Many participating artists were performing on a stage for the first time, with limited production support. The challenge was to design a live experience that could elevate each act while remaining economical and adaptable. Rather than building bespoke sets, the show was conceived as a flexible system capable of shifting throughout the day.
The stage design centered on a series of mobile stair structures that were reconfigured between performances, allowing each act to occupy the space differently within a shared framework. A large LED backdrop functioned as a single canvas for varied visual expression, supporting distinct identities without fragmenting the overall experience.
Go West Fest demonstrated how structure and restraint can create space for new voices to emerge. The project treated design as infrastructure, enabling creative freedom while maintaining coherence across a collective cultural moment.
